History of Character in their Game: Al arrived in Norfinbury on day one of the session, with a huge amount of other people who were in the same boat as him - the same frozen, unable to sail because the sea was entirely frozen, boat. Having very little information about why or how he arrived, Al turned to the strange device he'd been provided with. This was an immediate steep learning curve, as he had never seen or used anything like a tablet before. Because of this, he named himself LELRIC by accident, something that has haunted him ever since. In discussing the possibilities of where they were and how to get out again, Al met some of the people that would become very important to him in the months to come - Sheena, Steph, Mami, and Hook. He also found out that Greed, a homunculous from his world, was present, however they didn't manage to speak much.
A lot of the next few days were spent in mutual confusion with everyone else who had arrived in Norfinbury, as well as getting to know one another and discovering a few frightening aspects to the town - such as their ability to somehow inject everyone at once without being seen. He also began to feel the effects of cold and hunger, though he internally denied them. Having been a hollow suit of armour for so long, the idea that he might have to eat in this body was utterly ridiculous. It was day four when he finally collapsed through exhaustion and found out that this body now needed sleep. This was a huge and mind-breaking thing for him to have to accept, and it's something he struggled with for almost the entire time of his stay. During this confused period, he met Tadashi and Max, two people who would become his best friends in the days to come.
Max and Hook became Al's focus for a while. Both of them were prone to isolating themselves, which had already proven to be quite dangerous, and Al was worried about them both. Max, especially, proved to be quite reluctant when it came to overtures of friendship. But Al was persistent, asking small steps of things like just sending a single text to make sure he reached shelter at night, and then building from there. By the time that Max and Hook died, Al had managed to befriend both of them properly. Their deaths, though especially Max's, hit him very hard because of how much he had tried to open them up and protect them, it was a cruel reminder that he couldn't always protect the people that he cared about.
On day six, the first person returned from the dead. This freaked Al out to an incredible degree, as revivals are only possible in his world thanks to a philosopher's stone - an alchemical tool made by sacrificing live humans - and even then the revival is never properly successful. He began to worry that the previous residents had been turned into a giant philosopher's stone to power the revival mechanic, and that the death losses people suffered when they came back were a part of the equivalent exchange. This is still something that bothers him greatly, and he will never tell someone outright that he's glad they're back from the dead, or that he hopes their friends might revive, because he just can't agree with revivals. Even his own brother has died, and Al has said that he hopes that Ed isn't revived, because his brother wouldn't want that.
As time goes on, Al takes on a number of roles for himself. He marks buildings that he passes through with his name, contact details, and the day he's passing through so that anyone who sees it will know that they're not alone. He also decides that, along with exploring, he is best suited to try and help people out on an emotional level. So he sets about trying to get to know most people, trying to befriend them, and being on hand when new people begin to show up over the coming weeks. It's not always a task that goes down well with others, there are a lot of people who take exception to being 'aggressively friended', but he perseveres because he believes that everyone will survive this better with support and companionship.
He travels with Mami, Steph, Freya, and Tadashi for a long time; and then his brother, Ed, joins the group when he arrives. They weather anomalies attacking them, food shortages, illnesses, the start of MN poisoning, and several game events together. During one of the events, where they begin to feel a depression that keeps mounting, Mami admits the level of despair that she lives with. Even though Al doesn't quite manage to make her feel better, the two of them become a little closer through that experience. A huge blow comes to him when Tadashi and Ed die, however, and his optimism is knocked for a long time. It takes Steph, who is always there with him, to get him to recover again and keep trying to move on.
In discussions with Greed, Al begins to discover that there are multiple versions of his own world out there, as well as multiple worlds in general. Greed remembers different things happening in Amestris, as well as slightly different people, and they both reluctantly conclude that they're from different versions of Amestris. This scares Al, as he worries that he won't be able to get back to his original world.
It would be impossible to talk about all the events that happened, both mod run and player based, but some of the ones that had the most major impact on Al would be the following. An event occurred where prophet eyes began to replace people's normal eyes, and then the people with prophet eyes (of which Al was one) began to attack the other residents. This is the first time that Al has ever killed anyone, and it was Dr. House. Killing is such an anathema to how he lives his life, that to have been forced to do it almost broke him. Even though he dislikes Dr. House a lot, the guilt he feels about what he did makes him easy to manipulate. He tries to actively avoid places where House can be found, and accepts that the other man is frightened of him now even though that cuts deeply. That's the first real time, despite being controlled before, that Al began to really distrust himself and if he could actually protect the people that he promised he would protect.
That would be stretched even further in a later event, also regarding the prophet, where Al's mental state became altered to believe that the only way to help sinners reach the prophet's light was to torture them. He committed horrific acts on Royce and the Cat, all the while talking as he usually did - explaining that these things were the help them, that he was trying to protect them, and that they just needed to hold out before good things started to happen. This devastated him in a very drastic way, and shook his belief that he could be of any use to the people in Norfinbury at all. It was actually a visit from the Cat, one of the people he tortured, that brought him out of it. The Cat told Al that he knew that Al couldn't have fought against the mind control, because he always did everything with his "whole heart", which inspired Al to once again try and fight this town and protect the people in it with his whole heart.
Although the Joker is a person, his presence counts as an event for Al. His dangerous 'jokes' and his utter disregard for other life angered Al and, after murders were committed, he vowed to hunt him down and keep him in custody for the safety of others. This pitted him against several people who thought that was a bad idea, as well as others who also wanted to hunt down the Joker for their own revenge or other ends. He met up with and fought the Joker several times, and only came out on top once. Other times they fought ended in at least one person dying and, eventually, Al had to concede that continuing to pursue him only ended in a cycle of destruction that, because of the revival system, didn't solve anything.
One of the things that helped keep Al sane throughout his time in Norfinbury were the friends that he made, and seeing how he made a positive impact on them as well as visa versa. Possibly his strangest couple of friends were Tim and Sylar. Tim came from a world where Slenderman was real and constantly trying to attack him; he was abrasive, coarse, and really against having any friends. Somehow, Al managed to help Tim see that being alone wasn't always for the best, and Tim helped teach Al about technology (and terrible humour). They way they made one another's lives better gives Al proof that Norfinbury isn't totally bad. Another example of this was Sylar, who was a mass murderer in his own world, but wanting to turn over a new leaf. Al has championed his change of heart tirelessly and, in return, he has been able to see Sylar make other friends and give genuine contributions to their efforts to get out of the town.
How did they change from their canon personality wise (Please explain what caused it to happen?) Al hasn't changed much from who he has always been. The core of determination and hope that saw him through his mother's death and horrific reanimation, and the subsequent trials of his home, have helped him to survive equally as well in Norfinbury. He's more weary than he lets on to the people around him - he's tried and failed a lot of times, he's watched a lot of friends die, and he's been forced to do unspeakable things. He trusts himself less, always worried that he might be forced to hurt other people again, and he feels more helpless than he would want to let on. But he tries to keep all of this inside, he knows that he's the force of optimism that helps get a few other people through and he doesn't want them to lose that.
How did they change from their canon physically (Please explain what caused it to happen?): Al remains physically identical to his canon self, other than a few extra dings in the armour. He did have the ability to bleed; however, with the nanomachines failing, his body and abilities will go back to normal (see powers).
Powers: 1. Alchemy: Alchemy is Al's main ability. Alchemy is a scientific form of deconstruction and reconstruction. It allows the alchemist to break down an object into its component elements, and then reconstruct it into something else, or fix it if it was broken. Alchemy has a couple of limits - firstly, equivalent exchange must be used. This means that the object created can only be of equal mass to the one destroyed (so Al could make a statue out of earth, but it would leave an equivalent crater in the ground). Secondly, Alchemy is limited by the knowledge of the alchemist. Al, as well as his brother, are both prodigies, but they are far from knowing everything and so there are some things they simply can't do - healing the human body, for example.
2. Armour body: This is a curse as much as it is a power. Alphonse is just a soul bound to a suit of armour, which means he is hollow. He can take himself apart piece by piece and, as long as the blood seal remains in tact, he won't be hurt. He can't feel pain, cold, heat, he doesn't need to eat, or sleep, and he is incapable of even doing simple human things like crying.
Possessions: Al has his Norfinbury tablet, but nothing else.
