[Al's serious and slightly lecturing tone gives way to laughter abruptly, reaching up to bat at Ed's hands where they're tangled in his hair.]
I'm not so little any more, Brother! My voice is even starting to break now that I have my body back.
[He couldn't be happier about that, though it's weird after so long to hear the pitch of his voice finally deepening, albeit slightly.]
...I guess neither one of us is little any more, huh?
no subject
I'm not so little anymore, either. I've grown an inch you know. Not sure how, but that's an inch I didn't have before!
[ he shrugs a little bit, laughing, the darkness that once took control of his features before now completely gone. ]
Huh, I guess not. I don't know that we ever really were, not after mom died. [ he shrugs, thinking of how young they were, how much pain they suffered. ] It has to be weird for you to see the world from my height now, huh?
no subject
No, not really. It just feels... natural.
[He isn't sure if the following is true, but:]
Besides, I don't think I am your height, I think you might be taller than me.
no subject
he flops against his brother's bedside with a sigh, groaning. ] They say I'm growing more, and it's great, I'm going to be tall, but.
[ he looks up at Al as though he could just melt into the floor and never appear again. Ed has a flair for the dramatic. ]
Just means... new... automail...
no subject
At least Winry will be happy, but I think she might be mad that she only has your leg to work on now.
[Even that was still too much. He wished with all his heart and soul that Ed could have had a whole body too...]
no subject
[ he frowns a bit, but then the concept hits him and he blinks, wide eyed. ]
Al. We'll have to get jobs. [ because being a state alchemist of course was a job, but they were using it to their advantage, too. there were many things in their lives that would change. ] I mean, eventually. I've saved up you know but.
[ ugh, what a terrible thought, being a normal person. ]
no subject
[He doesn't share his suspicions that the military might not be done with them at all. True, Ed could no longer be a State Alchemist, but Al didn't think they'd just be cut loose forever. Colonel Mustang knew what a resource both of their minds were when it came to alchemical research, and Al could still perform transmutation.
But he doesn't say all that now, because he doesn't know if Ed will be happy about them still being connected that way.]
Isn't it great? You have a future now, Brother, you can do anything you want to do.
[No longer limited by need or grief, as they had been for so long.]
And I bet Winry and Granny won't throw us out while we work out what it is we want to do, though they'll probably make us help out.
no subject
but that was their life, wasn't it? perhaps it was for the best. ]
Yeah, I guess we both do. Weird, huh?
[ it's strange to think that they have the world ahead of them, that he doesn't need to think again about philosopher's stones or human transmutation, that he can forget homunculi and so much more. and yet... ]
I wouldn't mind helping out here for a while. It's the least I can do, right? [ he shrugs. ] But maybe I'll go back to Central, after we help them. I don't know, I feel like there's more I need to do, you know? [ and Al very well might see the same spark in Ed's eye -- the one that means his mind his reeling with theories and questions, the one that he'd get before a great transmutation, before he won a fight. ]
no subject
Yeah?
[He can't help but chuckle.]
Are you really sure you'll want to come back to Central? Colonel Mustang is even more determined to become Führer, and I bet he'll give you more orders than before if he manages it.
[Not that Ed would have to take them now. Come to think of it, his brother would probably enjoy a friendly confrontation with Mustang now that the Colonel wasn't his superior any longer.]
no subject
[ he's sure if he asked, he could get access to any files he wanted. he saved Amestris, after all, and the colonel would surely monopolize on his work, he has no doubt. ]
But I don't have to listen to that bastard anymore now than I did then. Especially now, Al. [ he grins, quite amused even thinking about it. he sighs and crawls up to flop on the bed beside his brother, almost childish in a way, which is something Ed has not done in a very long while. ]
It's like we're starting over, huh, Al? Like when this all started. We really have no idea what we're doing.
no subject
Yeah, it's kind of scary, huh?
[Scary in a good way, or that's what he thinks.]
We've been on the same path for such a long time, following any lead that could get us our bodies back, that it's weird now we've reached a crossroads. There's not just one path any more, there are so many branching out in front, and we can follow any one of them that we choose.
no subject
Yeah, I guess it can be pretty scary. But... but it's exciting, you're right. There's so much we can do now, so many places we can go.
[ he's smiling, looking at the wall opposite him, not at his brother, his mind spinning in a thousand different directions. ] Read whenever I want, stay up late, go wherever I want... [ he laughs. ] Sounds like a crazy life, huh?
no subject
[His voice is warm and soft. He can't imagine a nicer life than to see Ed be able to rest finally, to have peace and normality. Perhaps that was an equivalent exchange of its own, a restfulness to counterpoint the pain.
He reaches out to rest a hand atop Ed's head, trying to soothe his tired dumb brother into sleep.]
We'll find our future tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after. It's out there, Brother, and we've got our whole lives left to experience it.
no subject
Hey, I'm the big brother here now, in every way, so no ordering me around you got that?
[ but when he looks back up at Al, there is a smile across his lips and warmth in his eyes. he looks exhausted, Ed does, but there is a quiet sort of satisfaction that is there, too. Al is safe -- his body is returned to normal, and for once they have nothing but a full happy life to look forward to. ]
But I guess you're right. You always are, Al. [ he shrugs, sleepy eyed, turning against his brother's side, and even though the elder Elric fights it, his eyes slip shut, cheek mashed up against Al's side, reminiscent of the days when their mother was alive. for the first time in years, Ed looks completely and utterly at peace. ]
no subject
Al has so many hopes for the future, ones that he almost doesn't dare put into words yet because he's still reeling from finally being able to consider a future beyond getting his body back.
But his biggest hope for the future is that Ed gets to have one. That his brother can live a life of his choosing now, free from pain or obligation, free from the nightmares of the past.
He sets his hand on Ed's head again and just watches him sleep, smile at his lips.
It's finally done.]
